GEO-CENTERS' Surface Towed Ordnance Locator System
(STOLS) allows for fast, accurate and versatile geophysical
surveys for the location and mapping of unexploded ordnance,
storage tanks, trenches and barrels, hazardous waste
containers, buried utilities and landfills. The STOLS
towed sensor array provides high-productivity environmental
and site characterization.
GEO-CENTERS specializes in bringing innovative geophysical
investigation technologies to environmental restoration.
The patented STOLS system consists of a custom-built
light survey vehicle, a towed array of magnetometers,
a Differential Global Positioning System (GPS) with
2 cm accuracy, data acquisition computers, and custom
data processing and analysis software. The system provides
unmatched high-speed, low-cost site characterization.
Average survey rates of 30 acres per day are routinely
obtained, with documented peak coverage reaching 60
acres per day. A man-portable backpack system is also
deployable for smaller, vehicular-inhospitable sites.
Sensor data is collected at the rate of 20 times per
second, yielding 100,000 data points per acre. Graphical
displays and image hardcopy are created in minutes on-site.
GIS-compatible output is produced in any desired coordinate
system (e.g., lat/lon, UTM, state grid plane).
STOLS users include the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,
the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy,
the military services, gas companies, environmental
restoration firms, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD)
companies, and Architectural Engineering (A&E) houses.
STOLS survey work is available on the GSA schedule
for Information Technology Services (schedule number
GS-35F-5176H).
